Motivation (n) – “A pumped-up, ready-to-conquer-the-world “charge” you get after you attend a company meeting featuring a big-name network marketing guru.”
You’ve experienced it. Your blood is rushing through your veins at 60 miles an hour, your adrenalin is off the charts and you’re ready to set the world on fire. As you leave the place and you can’t wait to get back to your business and work on your plan to sponsor 40 people this month.
Ok, that might be a bit dramatic. But it’s not meant to poke fun at anyone, or diminish the “value” of motivation. I’ve experienced the same thing – over and over and over again. My problem was that although I was super excited and super motivated, I still wasn’t making any money.
Here’s my point.
External motivation is fine, if that’s what you think you need. The only problem is that it’s not enough. My upline will probably disown me if they ever get wind of this article. But that’s their problem, not mine. And if you’re a network marketer and you’re doing everything “right”… and you’re still struggling just to break even, you need to read every word of this article.
Here’s my perception of how motivation works. After the big convention you’re filled with fire and excitement for a few hours – maybe even a few days. But gradually reality sets in and gradually the excitement wears off– and you need to go back for more.
But the thing I’ve often wondered about is… if it worked the first time, why is there a need for you to go back for more? My answer is that it doesn’t work because it doesn’t last. It’s just a short-term fix to a long-term problem. But more on that in a minute.
So the big question is, “If motivation doesn’t work, then what does?”
Results.
And here’s why.
When you’re getting the results you want, and putting money in your pocket like never before, you don’t need “motivational” tapes and books and meetings and speeches. You need those things for training purposes for sure. But why would you need someone to pump you up and have you thinking you can go out and conquer the world when you’re already doing it?
On the other hand, if you’re working yourself into the ground and doing everything you’re supposed to do — and you end up worse off than you were when you started—you need all the motivation you can get.
The problem with “motivation” is that motivation treats the symptom (deflation and frustration) and not the problem (your inability to make money). If you go to the dentist with a toothache, you don’t want him to just prescribe toothache medicine. You want him to get to the “root” of the problem—and pull that tooth if it needs to come out!
It’s the same with motivation. In network marketing you don’t just need something that will help you get rid of your frustration over not making any money. You need a marketing system that will teach you how to generate your own targeted leads and put money in your pocket—even before you sponsor a single person.
Let me repeat.
What you need is an effective marketing system–one that will show you how to generate your own targeted leads and put money in your pocket—even before you sponsor a single person.
“But,” you say, “don’t I also need a strong WHY” to make it in this business?”
What you need in this business, what you need is strong reason for starting your business in the first place. And you need to set goals, and make plans to accomplish them. What you DON’T need is more lies and hype from those who should know better.
Everyone who has ever accomplished anything in this world started with a goal and a dream. But all the goals and dreams in the world won’t do you any good if you don’t have a marketing system that will help you turn those goals and dreams and plans into reality.
But back to motivation.
My friend Ann Sieg explains this motivation thing this way in chapter 6 of her new ebook, The 7 Great Lies of Network Marketing:
“External motivation is almost like a drug. It feels great when we’re in the moment listening to a story of how someone defied all the odds and became the success we dream about being.
“But then what happens?
“3 days later the realities of life have kicked in and it’s already worn off. So we look for the next story to inspire us. And the next, and the next, and on it goes.
“It’s just a quick fix — not a long-term solution.
Then she asks a very interesting question:
“Do you know what the ultimate motivator is though?
“Real results!”
It’s not a lack of motivation that causes 95% of network marketers to fail. It’s the absence of a marketing system that will put enough money in their pockets to pay their expenses while they build their business. They just run out of money…and quit.
You’ve probably figured out by now how I feel about motivation, so you won’t be surprised at my “logical conclusion:
If you’re in network marketing and you’re in need of constant external motivation, you’re not using the right marketing system.
Now I’ll need some help with this one, so let me turn again to Ann Sieg again. On page 28 she said: “If you’re using a shovel to dig the foundation for a house – when you could be using a bulldozer – then yes, you’re going to need a lot of motivation to get the job done.
“The more efficient your system is and the more ineffective your tools are, the harder you’re going to have to work to get results. And because of that, you have to make up for it big time with motivation.”
She adds that motivation really becomes a big issue when you have to “force yourself to pick up that 10,000 lb. phone to call your son’s soccer coach who you know doesn’t give a rip about your business!”
Sound familiar?
Here’s what I want you to do. Stop worrying about motivation and start concerning yourself with the real mechanics of marketing your MLM business.
And how do you do that?
“Find people who are looking for what you have,” says Ann, “and use an effective marketing system to automatically sell to them for you, and then spend your time working with the best ones.”
Remember, it’s not the amount of motivation you have that determines your success or failure in network marketing. It’s the marketing system you’re using.
What I like about Ann’s system is network marketing system is that doesn’t require you to make names lists, buy leads or even tell your friends and relatives about your business. And it’s designed so that your prospects can be a source of cash flow whether you sponsor them or not.
